Three of the citys most prestigious institutions have joined forces to launch 17 projects involving stem-cell research – including 11 involving human embryos, it was announced yesterday.
Scientists from the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University and Cornell Medical College will look for ways of using stem cells to cure cancer and other diseases.
The use of embryonic stem cells is a highly charged issue, and the federal government restricts its funding for research involving them.
President Bush recently vetoed legislation that would have liberalized the policy.
